Tag audit

How it works

01

Paste a URL

We read the page's Open Graph and Twitter Card meta tags directly โ€” the same tags Facebook, LinkedIn, and X read when someone shares your link.

02

Check both previews

Facebook/LinkedIn and X render share cards slightly differently โ€” and X often falls back to your Open Graph tags if Twitter-specific ones are missing.

03

Fix what's missing

The tag audit below shows exactly which tags are present so you know what to add to your page's <head>.

Why your link preview looks wrong (and how to fix it)

When someone pastes your URL into Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, or X, the platform doesn't screenshot your page โ€” it reads a specific set of meta tags in your <head> (the Open Graph protocol, originally built by Facebook, now used almost everywhere) to build the card. No tags, and most platforms fall back to guessing from your page's regular <title> and first image, which is how you end up with a random logo or the wrong headline showing up when your link gets shared.

The four that matter most: og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:type. For X specifically, add the twitter:card tag (usually summary_large_image for a big image card) โ€” without it, X may not show a card at all, even if your Open Graph tags are perfect. Image size matters too: aim for at least 1200ร—630px: too small and platforms may reject it or shrink it awkwardly.

This isn't just cosmetic. A broken or generic-looking preview measurably drops click-through when your link gets shared โ€” people are pattern-matching on "does this look legitimate and relevant" in a fraction of a second, and a missing image or a title that doesn't match the destination reads as spam or a broken link.

Frequently asked questions

Platforms cache link previews aggressively so they don't re-fetch your page on every share. Use Facebook's Sharing Debugger or X's Card Validator (search for "post inspector" / "card validator" on each platform) to force a re-scrape after you've updated your tags โ€” this tool only reads live tags, it can't clear their cache.

Not strictly โ€” X falls back to your og:* tags if Twitter-specific ones are missing, except for twitter:card, which has no Open Graph equivalent and controls whether you get a large-image card at all. Adding it is a two-minute fix worth doing.

1200ร—630px (a 1.91:1 ratio) is the widely-used safe size that renders well as a large card on both Facebook and X without cropping awkwardly. Smaller images may display as a small thumbnail instead of a full card.
